21 November 1944
Target: Merseburg, Germany

Tuesday, November 21, 1944:

Sixth Mission, Merseburg, 8 hours. Air Medal Mission. Fighters and flak. Hastings and Buzza shot down by fighters. Saw 9 men bail out. 6 ships out of 13 from 603rd Squadron got back, one made it back late making 7 safe. Mayhall hit with flak, nothing serious, but plenty close. Schanzback nicked also. Tough raid and lucky to get back. Out of 13 ships we were the only 3 in formation. Low on gas, but not too bad. Lead low - low element. Only squadron in the 8th Air Force to be hit with fighters.
